In Bert Waggoner’s national address to our movement he reminded us of the three foundations of our movement that will sustain us for the next 25 years:

  • We are a Kingdom of God movement.
  • We are a people who pursue the move of the Holy Spirit.
  • We are to be a missional people.

Our conference in June will be devoted to better defining and understanding what it means to be a “missional people”. This is more than doing servant evangelism projects; more than doing outreach and more than telling our people to bring their friends to church. We are a movement who exists for the world not just for our members – we are on a mission to be part of what Jesus is doing in our communities.

Bert Waggoner  - In September 2000, the Board of the Association of Vineyard Churches (AVC-USA) appointed Bert as National Director. Bert continues as the Senior Pastor of The Vineyard Church of Sugar Land.

He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Southern Bible College in Houston and a Master of Divinity degree from Nazarene Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri. While in seminary, he pastored Calvary Church in Lawrence, Kansas; later, he returned to Southern Bible College as a professor and chairman of the Bible and Theology Department.

In 1976, Bert planted Church of the Redeemed in southwest Houston. Church of the Redeemed merged in 1979 with Church in the City, which later became the Houston Vineyard Christian Fellowship. He served as senior pastor of the Houston Vineyard from 1979 through 1993, then planted the Sugar Land Vineyard in 1994.

Dr. Todd Hunter serves as the National Director for Alpha USA.In addition to his work with Alpha, Todd is presently an adjunct teacher at Fuller Seminary, Wheaton College George Fox University and Western Seminary. Prior to working with Alpha, Todd served as the Director of Allelon Ministries International (2001-2004). From 1994-2001, Todd served as the National Director for the Association of Vineyard Churches with John Wimber, where he was involved with church planting and leadership for over 25 years.

While working with Vineyard churches, Todd related to many evangelists, pastors of evangelism and church planters. It was then that Todd discovered Alpha as an amazing tool for reaching people who, although skeptical about God and the church, are open to honest relationships and dialogue. During this same time frame Todds wife, Debbie, began to cook the meals for the hundreds of people attending the Alpha Course and the Youth Alpha Course at the Vineyard Anaheim.

Todd has an upcoming book (2008/2009) with Intervarsity Press that describes the inseparable link between spiritual formation and effective 21st century evangelism.
